Narcissus has become real in the modern world, but instead of his own reflection in the water, his reflection is shown by all the media he4 chooses to consume—social media, movies, books—and instead of admiring his own beauty, he imagines his superiority to the "average person" or the normie, or the NPC, whatever he calls them.
There are several flavors of modern Narcissus, but they all revolve around the same core: 1) cowardice to actually make changes in his life 2) an attraction to intellectual domains which distance him from most people (examples below). Here are some of my examples:
Political Narcissus who has all the "redpilled" takes but has no friends because he is insufferable to be around, and anyway he is too edgy for human relationships
Psychological/Philosophical Narcissus who is very similar to political Narcissus but in other domains. In fact the modern Narcissus is quite commonly interested in those 3 fields, which share the similarity of giving an interface to understand human beings with, without directly interacting with them—the root of which is, like many traits in modern people, cowardice
Spiritual/Esoteric/Occult Narcissus who supposedly has access to deep wisdom and truths you couldn't understand with your normie brain, but in reality the only reason he has time to engage in all of that is because he doesn't have a job, struggles with money, probably doesn't have many friends either, and again is rather insufferable to be around
Programming Narcissus - this one is interesting because he might succeed well, even very well in our current society, and as such he is different in noticeable ways, but when it comes to relating to people outside of his field, the air of superiority cannot be missed in essentially everything he talks about. Programming being a detail-oriented discipline, this type of Narcissus has an opinion on literally everything, and of course if you disagree with him you’re stupid
Of course if I were honest with myself I would say I fall pretty significantly within the first 3 categories, and there's an air of superiority—which really comes from low self-esteem—that you might infer from my writing. The reason why I can see this dynamic so clearly is because I myself am a modern Narcissus too.
I think writing further reinforces this dynamic too, because it creates some distance from reality and people, and this split is necessary for the sense of superiority to exist, because after all, how could you feel superior to those whom you feel connected to?
